THE CONSTITUTIONAL COURT OF THE REPUBLIC OF LITHUANIA

The Constitutional Court ensures the superiority of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania on the entire territory of Lithuania through the consideration and adoption of resolutions regarding the conformity of laws of the Republic of Lithuania and other bodies possessing powers to issue legal deeds with the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania. The Court also considers the conformity of legal deeds issued by the President and Government of the Republic of Lithuania to the Constitution and laws of the Republic of Lithuania.
Executing its powers the Constitutional Court is independent and beyond the control of any governmental institution, individual, or organization, it obeys only the Constitution of the Republic and has no right to proceed from the political and other motives.

The Constitutional Court consists of 9 judges appointed for a term of 9 years, which cannot be prolonged. Every three years, one-third of the Constitutional Court is reconstituted. The Seimas chooses three candidates for Constitutional Court judges from the candidates nominated by the President of the Republic, three candidates from those nominated by the Chairperson of the Seimas, and three candidates from those nominated by the Chairperson of the Supreme Court. The Seimas appoints the Chairperson of the Constitutional Court from among the judges thereof and on the nomination of the President of the Republic of Lithuania.

In 1997 the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Lithuania was admitted to Full Membership in the Conference of the European Constitutional Courts.
